On Thursday, July 25th, TPD hosted a group of interns from various organizations at our headquarters in Pottstown, PA as part of a Pennsylvania pilot program for the transportation industry’s Total Quality Initiative (TQI) Workforce Development Program for Shared Interns. Collaborating organizations for our eastern region included PennDOT District 5-0, The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission’s Eastern Regional Office, ACEC/PA members (TPD, JMT & Urban), and APC members (The H&K Group).

The purpose of this program was to give interns from agencies, consultant firms and contractors exposure to each aspect of the business of building and maintaining Pennsylvania’s infrastructure, from the perspective of leaders across various organizations. The group visited each participating firm’s office for one day each week for interactive educational sessions and collaborative learning.

Two of TPD’s interns benefitted from this enriching and innovative experience. One of our participants noted “the program definitely helped me form connections with people in the industry… [it] helped me meet people that are already established in the field while also introducing me to other interns that will eventually be significant members of the field. I would also say that the program helped me gain a new perspective on the field as a whole and influenced how I feel about my own career moving forward.”

During their time at TPD, the interns attended well-rounded sessions on not only engineering, CM/CI, and other technical topics, but also were provided with insights on how businesses function operationally.

It was a great pleasure to be involved in the entire process and we are looking forward to helping further develop the program for years to come!
