Riddle Hospital Advanced Ambulance Preemption

Project Details
Location:Middletown Township, Delaware County, PAClient:Main Line Health/Riddle HospitalCompletion Date:April 2021Share

TPD provided transportation engineering services for Main Line Health and Riddle Hospital to provide advance ambulance preemption for exiting the Hospital’s West Entrance at Baltimore Pike. The project involved the installation of a push button station inside the Ambulance Building with a radio connection to the nearby traffic signal. Depression of the push button activates a green traffic signal indication for the hospital driveway exit allowing vehicle queues to dissipate in time for the ambulance to exit unimpeded.

This project was completed as a design/build project requiring TPD to work closely with General Highway Products who supplied and configured the preemption equipment and Charles A Higgins & Sons who installed the preemption equipment. Early coordination with PennDOT and Middletown Township allowed the project to be planned, implemented and permitted within a six month window during expansion of the hospital.
