TPD (formerly Atlantic Traffic and Design) was designated as a vendor and retained by DuPont Company to review a mid-block pedestrian crossing along Cheesequake Road at their Parlin facility. The crossing serves Dupont’s employee parking lot. Previous discussions between DuPont and the Borough of Sayreville indicated a full traffic signal would not be warranted at the subject location. Therefore, TPD studied the existing pedestrian crossing volumes as well as the characteristics of the adjacent roadway and designed a pedestrian hybrid beacon for a relocated pedestrian crossing. ATDE worked closely with DuPont representatives and other members of the project team to incorporate other various site improvements intended to increase the safety and visibility of the pedestrian crossing. The design also incorporated wireless advanced flashing warning signage on both Cheesequake Road approaches to the crossing to adequately warn motorists when the hybrid beacon is active. Additionally, intersection radius improvements were proposed at the DuPont facility driveway to shorten the length of crossing at Cheesequake Road and improve traffic operations.
