TPD was selected by the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC) to complete the design of the replacement of the Yellow Springs Road Bridge over the PA Turnpike (EB-730 at Milepost 317.37). The project involved the replacement of an existing single span structure with a new 2-span structure to facilitate the future widening of the mainline Turnpike from a four-lane section to a six-lane section. In addition, the alignment of Yellow Springs Road was corrected to eliminate a substandard horizontal curve south of the structure. To accommodate this re-alignment, the proposed structure crossing the mainline was placed on a new alignment immediately to the east of the existing structure. The new structure is a 2-span, curved steel I-Beam bridge with an approximate total length of 175 feet.

Throughout the design process, TPD developed various line and grade designs for the re-alignment of Yellow Springs Road. The alignments were developed in coordination with the designers for the mainline section as well as with local municipal officials and stakeholders. TPD also coordinated the design of the stormwater management system and Post Construction Stormwater Management Plan to meet the stringent requirements of the Valley Creek watershed, which has been deemed Exceptional Value (EV).

TPD’s responsibilities on this project included the completion of all engineering and environmental tasks for the proposed bridge replacement, including:

  • Project Management/ Administration
  • Line and Grade
  • TS&L and Final Structure Design and Plans
  • Environmental Coordination
  • NPDES Permitting
  • Traffic Control Plans
  • Signing and Pavement Marking Plans
  • Right-of-Way Plans
  • Utility Coordination
  • Stakeholder/Local Official Coordination
  • Construction Documents
