The Belmont Park Redevelopment Project transformed 34 acres within the iconic Belmont Park Site, home to New York’s renowned thoroughbred racetrack in Elmont, just outside NYC. Known for hosting the Belmont Stakes—the final leg of the Triple Crown—Belmont Park now includes the UBS Arena (home of the NY Islanders), a vibrant retail village, a new Long Island Railroad (LIRR) transit station, a multi-level parking garage, and a dedicated rideshare drop-off area.

TPD’s New York office (formerly Atlantic Traffic and Design) provided critical traffic engineering design and permitting services to support this redevelopment. Our team facilitated the design and permitting of three traffic signal plans submitted to the New York City Department of Transportation (NYCDOT) and the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT). We also designed off-site infrastructure improvements, including the widening of Hempstead Turnpike (NYS Route 24), creation of two bus pullout lanes, enhanced streetlighting, and upgraded pedestrian sidewalks along the project frontage. TPD further supported the project through consultant inspection services during construction.

In addition to these off-site improvements, TPD collaborated with the site engineering team as the traffic consultant for on-site circulation and parking layouts, serving both the UBS Arena and the retail village.

Since the UBS Arena’s opening, TPD has continued its partnership with the operations team, providing ongoing traffic monitoring and periodic updates to the site’s Transportation Management Plan. Through regular meetings with Arena stakeholders and local community representatives, TPD actively supports the evolving transportation strategy to ensure that traffic and parking needs are effectively addressed as the development matures.
